What is a Green Card?
A Green Card gives you the status of permanent resident of the United States and enables
you to legally work in the United States. A Green Card does not affect your current

country’s passport.
What are the benefits of being a Green Card holder?
A Green Card allows you the freedom to leave and return to the United States as you
wish (with some exceptions). It also enables you to seek employment freely. A Green
Card gives you many of the same rights as a United States citizen.
What are the different ways to get a Green card? How to get a Green card?
There are five main ways an individual can obtain a Green Card:
1. Employee Based Green Card
2. Investment
3. The Diversity Visa Lottery Program

5. Family Based Green Card (e.g., marriage to a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident)

native country to apply for a Green Card.
What if I am an alien spouse residing abroad?
The process is similar, but includes a few more steps. The citizen spouse must file the
Form I-130 Petition for Alien Relative and await its approval. Once approved alien
spouse will receive a package of information from the National Visa Center (NVC) that
explains the procedure for obtaining a Green Card.
