A Debt Settlement Agreement is used by a debtor and a creditor to settle an outstanding debt, usually for an amount that is different from the original debt amount or on different repayment terms. When a debt is settled for less than the regular amount, it is important to document the agreement in writing to protect both parties' interests and to avoid confusion, misunderstandings and disputes regarding the amount paid and the agreed upon terms.
